This article reviews the situation with the Russian language in the former Soviet Union, draws attention to the importance of the Russian language in the process of socio-economic and cultural modernization of the Soviet Union. It shows the opposition of interests of modernizational ideas and activities of ruling elites of sovereign republics. Here the author emphasizes the need to maintain and strengthen the position of the Russian language in the former Soviet territory.
